Question by w ehr: I am looking for links to articles or videos on how to ride a horse that is spur stop and spur slow trained ?
I am looking for a client of mine that would like more info on this and also how to extend out a horse that has had this training.

Answer by burdfour
Delphi Forums “Pleasure Horse Journal Online” forum talks about spur stops a lot. The condensed version is that a firm steady squeeze, especially up near the girth, means for the horse to collect himself, slow, and/or stop/back, a leg further back would move the hind end, one leg up near the girth would control the shoulders. To extend the horse, use a bump, bump instead of a steady squeeze. Spur stop has a lot of personal techniques to it, and not all horses are trained the same, but most seem to have the general picture. It finally clicked in my brain when one of the trainers at that site said that she teaches her students “squeeze to slow, bump to go.” i have added some sites that I found interesting. The wikipedia article has a lot of good links.
Personally, I am comfortable with the spur stop cue. Any technique can be overused to the point of abuse, but I put this cue on my 17 year old horse over the course of one winter, and it does add a touch of silk to a smooth ride, for want of a better description. I personally disagree with the opinion that a spur stop trained horse can be used for only one event, WP, I knew (personally saw) a very spur stop trained horse that even ran speed events, and other that was used as show hunter. They just used the “bump to go” half of the equation, and used their legs to rate the horse, rather than pulling on the reins.
